Our first research paper!
Our first research paper, "Liquid-liquid phase separation as a tool to compartmentalize stimuli-responsive cargoes within protocell models" is finally out.
In this paper, our DC Pablo Moreno Reolid and our PI Laura Rodriguez Arco show how to organize the internal content of protocell models based on water-in-oil droplets. Exploiting the spatial segregation of two polymers within the aqueous phase to produce biphasic droplets, they show that magnetic field-responsive nanoparticles functionalized with dextran are preferentially sequestered within the dextran subphase, generating heat when exposed to alternating magnetic fields (AMFs). Using this heat, they show that AMF-induced heating provided by the magnetic nanoparticles significantly enhances enzymatic activity by increasing temperature to optimal values for the enzyme.
